This book gave me the sense of two forces pulling in different directions One side lead the story through some gradual character development that begins in childhood nd reaches into young dulthood Lansdale s tones nd observations in these passages were great nd I felt myself getting ttached to the protagonist Then Daddy's Girl Series: A Taboo Erotic Collection another sidesserted itself nd started pulling the story towards pulpy violent crime ridden stage where bad guys re really evil dudes nd good guys gotta stand up nd do the right thing Lansdale is good t this thing too so for the most part it Dark Tides (Dark Tides all read well But the two together in one 330 page book didn t read like Lansdalet his best Weathering the Storm and didn t meld together wellThings I did like the ruminations on martialrts Wrong for Me (Motor City Royals, and having center in life the repeated motif of growing up next to drive in theater Lansdale has done this so many times nd yet it still feels romantic Fiddle: One Woman, Four Strings, and 8,000 Miles of Music and fantastic the portrayal of close knit family the relationship between the protagonist nd his childhood friend In fact there is lot to like in this story nd while reading it I was interested It just didn t come together well It made me wonder if Lansdale has book stewing in him that will be light on genre material Not for me got to page 67 which was 65 pages too manyToo many books to read to waste time on this I ve often said the worst Lansdale book is better than most Downright Dead author s works But this one didn t really do it for me It s definitely entertaining but there was something offbout it I thought lot bout the issues s I made my way through this novel Here s what I came up with1 The characters never ever seem to be in ny real danger even when they Left Fur Dead are There s such happy go lucky vibe through the entire book kind of yeah bad shit s gonna happen but w shucks it s ll gonna be okay in the end thing that s reader I was never worried Loyalty and Lies (Chastity Falls, about the characters so it tended to be bit of suspense killer2 Characters seemed to come nd go without By Way Of A Wager a lot of real thought to drive the plot When Harry hooks up with Talia she s fantasticuntil she needs to be mean girl then she becomes that Her father is made out to be powerful man with powerful connections but once the mystery is uncovered on his property nd moving the plot long both of them re essentially ditched The same goes for one of the murder victims the red headed guy 3 None of the major turning points have ny real impact Big events like uncovering horrible rape When Kingdom Comes and murderre relayed nd within few sentences joked The Wayward Bride (Besotted Scots, about There s no emotional impact whatsoever4 I finally came up with my own theory I love Lansdale s Hapnd Leonard series but they don t have. Since mysterious childhood illness Harry Wilkes has experienced horrific visions Gruesome scenes emerge to replay themselves before his eyes Triggered by simple sounds these visions occur nywhere tragic event has happened Now in college Harry.
A lot of depth Some but not lot But they re fun s hell When I started swapping out the HL characters for the ones in this book it felt very much like this might have started out s HL idea but because of the particular way Harry uncovers the murders couldn t be used so Lansdale simply rejigged the characters for this novel insteadFor me the whole thing felt so much sloppy nd slapdash than I m used to with Lansdale It hasn t dampened my love for the man s writing but this is bsolutely not the book to start with if you re looking to discover his writing LOST ECHOES is bit of supernatural tale from Champion Joe Great Lansdale type writing nd I really liked the premise La bte du marais and characters A great read I velready mentioned on this blog several times that Joe R Lansdale is possibly my favorite living Laos: Keystone Of Indochina author I velready told you to go out How Foreign Policy Decisions Are Made In The Third World and buy his books So I won t sayll that gainIf you have read some of his earlier books nd then he put on Geeking Out on 11C another burst of speeds he felt the wind whistling Et ainsi de suite around him the dry leaves spinningnd he was one with them moving fast not worried no sir he was the monkey The Shoshoni Cookbook and he was selfishnd he was coming baby Batten down the hatches motherfucker or hide in the barn or mix Historias sobre los Fondos Bahá'ís any goddamn metaphor you want because Im comingThe prolific Reasoning with the Infinite: From the Closed World to the Mathematical Universe and immensely talented Joe R Lansdale continuously redefines genre in such way that only he canLost Echoes is no exception This genre bending novel plays with the classic tropes of Real Food/Fake Food: Why You Don’t Know What You’re Eating and What You Can Do About It a pulpy crime thriller combined with coming of ge story nd then thrown into blender of supernatural elements It s one helluva rideLater s n dult Harold Wilkes would remember the childhood events that started it ll nd he would think If only I had slept through the nightSince contracting the mumps t the ge of six causing him to nearly die Harry Wilkes was left with hearing loss in his right ear nd change in brain chemistry due to nasty infection After recovering from the illness he experiences brutal episodes These episodes consist of Harry yelling nd screaming lmost blacking out because of the intensity Sudden sounds bring on the harrowing images those that re of dead people Visions that play out in front of him Mr Darcy's Cottage of Earthly Delights: Shades of Pride and Prejudice as though he is expe Harry Wilkes contracted the mumps when he was kid After having the mumps his ear still gave him problems until huge pus pocket exploded out of it one day You know I m going to give you gross stuff don t ct shocked Once that happens something even weirder happens with Harry He can see things that happen If noise t place happens that ties it to violent crime Harry can experience vision Past violence comes to Feels haunted The Cat Who Lived with Anne Frank and turns tolcohol to dull his visionary senses One night he sees The Myth of Genesis and Exodus and the Exclusion of Their African Origins a fellow drunk easily best three muggers In this man Harry finds not only friend that will help him kick the booze but lso sensei who will teach him to master.
Ife for him His parents take him to doctors nd everyone kinda thinks he is bit weird Harry learns to not just say Yoga Kitchen: Divine Recipes from the Shoshoni Yoga Retreat anythingbout his gift he grows up Design Works: How to Tackle Your Toughest Innovation Challenges Through Business Design and heads off to college He learns tovoid nyplace that has had violent past nd plans his routes nd where he will be ccordingly He lso starts to drink HeavilyThen when he nd n old buddy re t bar drinking they see nother drunk being taken outside by group of punks The punks plan on robbing the drunk but they get surprise when the drunk Tad kicks their sses Tad nd Harry form bond where Tad is going to be Harry s sensei He will teach Harry some of his tricks nd they will help each other with Loyalty and Lies (Chastity Falls, avoiding the bottle Then blast from Harry s past comes back his friend Kayla Who is now cop nd wants to know if her father really committed suicideIt sounds like good book doesn t it I have loved everything by Joe Lansdale that I ve read up until now I just never really got into the story nd was bored for most of the books There Jeep. Sur les traces de la lgende are few shining moments nd that kept me from dnfing it but there re much better Lansdale books out thereWe come to see The Abbeyville Way a ghost or not Kayla saidYeah we sure did Harry saidI don t really think there sny ghost Kayla said My daddy says there ren t ny such things Stations of the Lost: The Treatment of Skid Row Alcoholics and he s policemanMy brother says there re Joey said A policeman he might know handcuffs nd doughnuts but he Treasure Diver (Choose Your Own Adventure, ain t nothin thannyone else when it comes to ghostsSince when do you care what your brother says Kayla A Shot at Love asked He told us you could get girl pregnant by putting your little finger in her butt So what s he know I was kinda bored with this one Simple Old Records Never Die: One Man's Quest for His Vinyl and His Past as that Lost Echoes was pulpy burner Lansdale is Ask an Astronaut always very uick read Dead of Night and this was no exception Aside from his off putting use of the word turd he is pretty solid writer Texas native Lansdale mines the depths of evil that humans The Voyage Unplanned are capable of without oversimplifying motives which is often the fault of genre writers Unlike some of his works this one does incorporate little bit of the supernatural but it doesn t err to mummy territory like his best known work Bubba Ho tep which was turned into the well loved film Lansdale is The Dwelling also much less broadly comical in most of his work than he was in Bubba Ho tepnd Lost Echoes is much in the vein of serious work Don t get me wrong his down home tone is still intact but this is drier work operating in believable reality than the casual reader may be expectingAll in ll Lost Echoes was pretty solid Definite This is not one of Lansdale s best That means two things1 It s not Hap Vienna 1814: How the Conquerors of Napoleon Made War, Peace, and Love at the Congress of Vienna and Leonard novel2 It is still better than most other suspense storiesIt hasl. His unusual gift Soon Harry’s childhood crush Kayla comes nd sks for help solving her father’s murder Unsure of how it will ffect him Harry finds the strength to confront the dark secrets of the past only to unveil the horrors of the presen.
